Quartermile Re-development, Edinburgh

A £350 million re-development of a former hospital site comprising extensive demolition (including asbestos removal), refurbishment and new build works to provide 650no. prestigious apartments, 460,000 sq. ft. of commercial office and retail space, underground car parking as well as hotel, social and leisure facilities within a landscaped setting. Completion is expected to be in 2013.

The project is multi award winning and has been described as the most important and exciting regeneration project in Edinburgh, delivering new standards in design and quality.

Three elements of design work and construction are presently ongoing – infrastructure, new build and refurbishment, each with a design team and lead consultant. As the CDM Co-ordinator C-MIST has been proactive in promoting greater health awareness amongst the design teams,
in line with the HSE’s emphasis on better health, as well as safety on construction sites.

Great North Tower, Manchester

Great North Tower, Manchester

C-MIST were appointed as the CDM Co-ordinator for the project which consists of 237no. residential units in three towers and includes underground parking facilities and retail units at ground floor level.

The tallest tower, facing Windmill Street, is 26 storeys in height. The towers are concrete with cladding panels and rain screen facades forming the external envelope.

The site is situated in the centre of Manchester, adjacent to the G-Mex Centre and the Manchester International Convention Centre.

Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick

Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick

C-MIST were appointed as CDM Co-ordinator for this award winning five star visitor centre, occupying a prominent location on the shore front in the seaside town of North Berwick.

The building incorporates exhibitions on birdlife and also links to cameras sited on the nearby islands of the Firth of Forth to allow visitors to view the birdlife in their natural habitat. A striking feature of the building is the flowing curved roof.

Donaldson's College, Linlithgow

Donaldson's College, Linlithgow

C-MIST were appointed as CDM Co-ordinator for this £2.5 million grant funded project comprising the construction of a school and residential accommodation for children with hearing difficulties.

The new building, designed in close collaboration with staff and pupils, accommodates the curriculum which Donaldson has developed to meet the needs of its pupils at nursery, primary and secondary levels.

Donaldson's College, Linlithgow

In addition, it will be a home-from-home for about 30 pupils during the week, requiring a different set of responses from the building in terms of scale, feel and security. The design incorporates state of the art technology.

Business Incubation Centre, Alba Campus, Livingston

C-MIST were appointed as CDM Co-ordinator for this project consisting of the construction of a 2 storey building forming individual units providing accommodation for small businesses.

External work included forming car-parking, footpaths, drainage and a new access road. Services (power, gas, water and telecommunications) were brought into the site as part of this project.

The centre is designed to offer a “quick-start” location for micro-electronics firms and their design activities and provides a range of accommodation, from start-up suites, allowing immediate entry, to purpose-built properties.

Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham

C-MIST were appointed as CDM Co-ordinator for this development which comprises new private and affordable residential accommodation and commercial units on a former multi industrial use site in Birmingham.

There is a total of 189no. apartments and the development will be 8 storeys high plus a semibasement car park for 115no. cars.

Kinleith Mill, Edinburgh

Kinleith Mill, Edinburgh

Kinleith Mill, Edinburgh is currently derelict and unoccupied and the site has been partially cleared in preparation for a housing development. C-MIST was commissioned by DTZ, a leading property advisory consultancy, to survey the building and site to identify significant risks to the public while it awaits development.

C-MIST was also commissioned, on the basis of the survey, to make appropriate recommendations on the safe management of the risks identified. A scope of works was prepared and the risks to the public such as:

  • Dangerous structure;
  • Hazardous earth slopes;
  • Hazardous voids

have now been eliminated.

Archdiocese of Glasgow

C-MIST is employed by the Archdiocese of Glasgow, to provide health & safety inspections and audits for their churches, halls and residential accommodation.

The inspections are undertaken every two years and some aspects considered are:

  • General housekeeping standards, maintenance of access & egress etc;
  • Ensuring that the first aid procedures and equipment are in place;
  • Checking that the required fire fighting equipment, emergency lighting, alarms, signage, etc. are in place and suitably maintained;
  • Ensuring that gas and electrical appliances have been maintained to comply with the appropriate legislation.

Gareth Hoskins Architects

Gareth Hoskins Architects

C-MIST was commissioned by Gareth Hoskins Architects, an award winning practice, to assist in developing and implementing appropriate health and safety procedures.

This was a two-stage operation:

  • Initially C-MIST developed and implemented a basic health and safety office package, including procedures for site visits and designer’s duties under the CDM Regulations.
  • A second stage provided formal training, particularly in relation to CDM Regulations matters.

The aim was that once completed, the Practice would be in a position to look after its own health and safety policy.
